The Peace Project, an international social movement that I work with in Sierra Leone, changed this man’s life by giving him a pair of crutches.
I took this photograph in May 2012 during one of The Peace Project’s crutch distribution efforts in Sierra Leone, West Africa.

Janet, thank you so much. Your words bring tears to my eyes. A number of the physically-challenged people that we gave crutches to, told us: “This is a miracle.” We handed out crutches in Sierra Leone to whoever needed them. Thank you for your blessings. My blessings to you, too. Michele
This type of mission is a wonderful thing. We support people who do similar things but haven’t been able to be directly involved. Both sides of the equation are needed.

Our help is financial but two of the groups we support are Compassion International and Gospel for Asia. We sponsor children and such a small (to us) amount provides so much for these children. It’s such a joy. We get letters from them, too, and pictures they’ve colored. When we sent a birthday gift and get a picture back of them, their family and all the things they purchased, it’s heart-achingly wonderful.

Janet, it’s wonderful to know that you are making a positive difference in the lives of these children and their families. The organization that I’m involved with also has a child sponsorship program. In addition, I sponsor a young guy called Musa who had his leg amputated by rebels during the 10-year civil war in Sierra Leone. All of us who do this work are blessed to have received this calling.

Such a wake the violence in Sierra Leone left. I remember being on ebay years back, buying a very old mask. The seller subsequently told me her husband found it somewhere in the region, and the village was subsequently wiped out. I look at it every day, wondering if there’s anyone left who would remember its origin.
